River Cruise on the Bucket List

Tuesday, April 26, 2022

We had always had a European River Cruise on our bucket list, but we had not done any serious research yet. Then, out of the blue, this trip showed up in our D.L. Evans Bank Travel Club options. Let's do it!! Then, of course, Covid caused it to be delayed. But, here were are, heading off to Portugal in the morning!

Shawn will pick us up tomorrow at 5:30AM for the ride to the airport where we'll meet our group of 24 people. We fly to Chicago on United, transfer to Lufthansa for the long flight to Frankfort, then on to Lisbon, where we'll spend a day touring. We go to our river boat in Porto and next day. We'll return home on May 7th.

The tour company that has put together this trip is Mayflower; the boat company is Emerald Waterways.

Thursday April 28 Lisbon

What happened to Wednesday? We left home at 5:30AM yesterday, Wednesday, to begin the long trek to Lisbon, Portugal. We met up with most of our group, fiddled with boarding passes, luggage tags, etc. We left Boise on time on United for the 3 ½ hour flight to Chicago...totally uneventful. Nice lunch at an Italian place in the concourse, then off to the Lufthansa gate. We boarded a giant Boeing 747 and left Chicago at about 4:00PM....again, totally uneventful, but not without irritations. My movie screen would work only erratically and both of our overhead reading lights were completely misdirected to be worthless. They did serve us a pretty nice dinner!

So we spent about 8+ hours in there, wishing it would be over. Sleeping is futile; its was only 4 o'clock! You can tell you're getting close because the sun's coming up! We arrive in Frankfurt at about 7:00AM local time. We grab a scone for a mid-morning snack and then off to another Luftansa flight for the final leg to Lisbon, another 3+ hours.

We arrive unscathed in Lisbon by about 11:00AM local time, retrieve our baggage and meet our tour guide for the half hour ride to the hotel. By then its 1:00 and the rooms aren't ready yet. So, since we were starving, we asked around and found our way to a delightful cafe called “Picasso Cafetaria”. I had a traditional Portugese dish called Cozido de Portugal and a great beer called Tulipe.

The weather is wonderful! Sunny and low 70s. Spring is in Lisbon! We finally got into our room by 3:00PM. We had been traveling for almost 26 hours and yesterday, Wednesday, is gone forever.

Our hotel is called the Avani. It's modern enough but lacks some things. The shower is downright dangerous (never seen a square tub/shower, toilet) and the coffee maker is terrible. We will be staying here for two nights.

At our dinner with the group of 24 this evening we should be able to get better acquainted. Most of our group comes from the Twin Falls area. My guess is that most of them have been farmers; We are all in our 70s and 80s.

Three other travel groups joined us for dinner tonight, making a total of about 60 people in this special event room on the second floor of this old building attached to the hotel. (It reminded me of the Oneonta Elk's Club). We were served a nice beef dish by a very competent staff! The wine was excellent. We enjoyed our table of 8 recollecting all the trips and experiences we'd had over the years. Boy, many of these people are unbelievable travelers; they've been everywhere!

Tomorrow we start with a motor coach tour of the city.

Friday April 29 Lisbon

After a nice buffet style breakfast at the hotel, we boarded our Coach and enjoyed a half day tour of the city of Lisbon, with a very knowledgeable English speaking guide. The weather today is spectacular!!

Our first stop was the Parque de Eduardo VII with an expansive view down over the city to the Targus River.

Then driving through the city to the Belem Tower and the unbelievable “Monument of the Discoveries”, featuring Portugese explorers. Amazing carvings in this huge monument resembling the prow of a ship.

Then, basically across the street, even though the coach had to go way around, we visited the Jeronimos Monestery and Cathedral. Most impressive!

We enjoyed sitting in the sun for a light lunch of Greek Salad at the cafeteria adjacent to the Maritime Museum.

We returned to the hotel by about 2:00, with free time for rest of the day. We started by getting an Uber ride for the short trip up the hill to a tropical garden, which was OK but wouldn't be on the itinerary for the next time! Then we took another Uber back down the hill to what they call the “Center City”, at the end of the Avenida da Liberdade. Lots of people, traffic, shops and sounds. It's wonderful! We stopped for Gelato at a hole in the wall, walked up some pedestrian only streets with a variety of shops. On the way back up the hill to the hotel, we stopped at the Banana Cafe for a snack.

We had arranged to meet a couple of ladies from our group for dinner (Jayne and Cynthia from Kansas) at an exclusive Japanese restaurant  (Yakuza) attached to the hotel. This was so exclusive that it was “reservation only”, there was no visible sign of the place outside and you had to ring the doorbell to get in!! But we had a wonderful meal of sushi and some great conversation!

There's a lot more to see in Lisbon! Tomorrow we head out early on our motor coach for trip north to Porto where we will meet our river boat. Some interesting stops a long the way are planned.

Saturday April 30 To Porto

We boarded our motor coach at 8:00AM for the trip north to Porto, where we would board the Emerald Radiance, after a few stops along the way. Another beautiful day! Bright sun, 80 degrees....it was hot at times!

We drove on the A1 road, a beautiful three lane highway. Better than what you find in the US! My only complaint, throughout the day, was that anytime the highway was going through anything resembling development, there was a high fence (much of it graffiti covered)....for miles and miles! Like driving through a tunnel!

Our first stop was the famous pilgrimage site of Fatima, “Our Lady of the Rosary” and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. Its all based on an “apparition” witnessed by three children in 1917, who were minding their flock, when they saw an unusual brilliant light from the sun. The “Lady” told the three children they must pray each month, on the 13th day, for the next six months, then to witness a miracle.

Read more about the "Fatima Apparitions"

They were supposed to keep this a secret, but word got out and by the six month, 70,000 people showed up to see the miracle! There never was a miracle, but ever after this site has become an important pilgrimage for devout Catholics. We saw pilgrims shuffling on their knees across the plaza (using kneepads) and carrying all sizes of candles toward the chapel.

The Basilica was started in 1928 and completed in 1953. There is also a very large, modern worship center and chapel. Note the modern style stained glass.

Of course, just off the parking area there are lots and lots of souvenir shops, peddling all things Catholic.

Back on the coach, our next stop was Coimbra, home of the oldest university in the Portugese world, dating back to the 1500s. (Universidad D Coimbra).  Twenty Thousand students are in residence there. Before visiting the campus, which is way up on top of a hill, we spent a little time in the charming village, and had lunch at a little Italian place out on the plaza.

Up on the campus, we witnessed a student group doing some kind of music ( Called “la Tuna”) celebration (a wedding?). We'd witness that later again in Salamanca) We then visited St. Michael's Chapel which was absolutely unbelievable; way “over the top”, with gold everywhere.....hard to describe! From the 11th century; its actual configuration is from a renovation in the 16th century, under King D. Manuel. The organ, built in 1733, still plays today!!

From Coimbra we got back on A1 and continued north to the city of Porto, the second largest city on Portugal, on the Douro River. This city looks completely different from Lisbon; lots of activity along the river, including the home base of lots of “River Cruise” boats, including ours. There were may odd looking craft out in the river – looked like party boats on a Saturday afternoon?

We checked into our cabin on the boat and were settled in by 5:00. The crew gave us a tour and outlined the rules. We found the “sun deck” (awesome), the bar, dining room, lounge and, importantly, the coffee machine! Dinner was served by a very attentive staff and we enjoyed Halibut and Chicken. We sat with a couple we had become acquainted with from Rupert, ID. Fun conversations. There are 62 people on the boat, which is only about 50% of its capacity....good for us, not so good for the company. They have only recently resumed operations after the Covid shutdown.

Tomorrow, the captain reports that we will shove off at 6:30am to spend the day sailing. We will be passing through three locks, so it's bound to be interesting.

Our cabin is tiny but quite comfortable. These ships don't have balconies, but the top half of the large window slides down so you feel outside.

Sunday May 1 on the River

We spent all day on the Douro River. Weather was disappointing early, overcast and cool. But by noon the sky had cleared and it was beautiful! Although quite windy at times. The highlight of the day was passing through three locks. These are amazing feats of engineering. The biggest one was the last, the Bagauste Dam which raised the water nearly 100 feet!

Early in the day, we passed by mostly forest, with few houses. As we progressed up river, it became hilly, dominated by terraced vineyards, with an occasional view of a “Quinta”, or vineyard Estate.

By 4:00ish we ended our day with a stop at the small town of Pinaoh. We left the boat and hiked into town, found nothing of interest and hiked back. (Things seemed to be closed because it was Sunday). There were four other river boats docked there for the night.

Tonight was the night for the “Captain's Dinner”.  We enjoyed scrumptious tenderloin of beef (or octopus if one was so inclined), with chocolate desert. All this paired with Portugese wines, of course.

We had dinner with new friends from Kansas, Cynthia and Jayne. We have shared most of our meals with them – they are great company!

Tomorrow we continue up river and visit our first Winery Estate. We will end the day the Portugal/Spain border, which is as far up river that one can go. There's another dam there, but no lock....so that's the end of the road.

Wine estates are called "Quinta"
